The very first balloon that we know of was a hot air model invented by Father Bartolomeu de Gusmão. He created a balloon from a paper envelope with burning material hanging below it.

On 8 August 1709, Gusmão showed his invention to Portuguese King John V. He flew his balloon inside at the Casa da India, Terreiro do Paço in Lisbon. The servants watching the demonstration were afraid the hot balloon would set the curtains on fire, so they rushed to knock it down.

It was the first demonstration of a real lighter-than-air craft.

Gusmão later ran away to Spain, because he was afraid of people claiming his flying balloon was the result of black magic.
