The Vasco do Gama Aquarium, in the Cruz Quebrada area of Lisbon, has built a solid reputation over the last 100 years as a premier oceanographic institution. The museum is the only one in the country to offer both a live exhibition as well as a museum.

Over 200 species can be viewed in 90 fresh and salt water tanks, including:

■ The Invertebrate Gallery
■ Sea Turtles
■ Freshwater Fauna
■ Saltwater Fauna
■ Tropical Species
■ Marine Mammals, such as South African Fur Seals

The museum offers five rooms of exhibitions:

■ Invertebrates from D. Carlos I Oceanographic Collection
■ Sharks
■ 600 species from the Portuguese
■ Mammals, Birds and Tropical Shells

Kids can also feed the large and colorful carps in the garden tank.
