Fado is traditional music of Portugal. It is usually performed by a small group of two three or four musicians. One sings while the others play guitars.

Sometimes, special Portuguese guitars of are used. These have 12 strings instead of the normal 6.

The word fado means “fate” or “destiny.” Usually the songs are sad, but very beautiful.

Fado has been sung in Portugal since the 18th century. No one knows for sure who sung the first fado song or how it became so popular.

Sometimes, in traditional Portuguese restaurants, fado singers will perform. Sometimes you find them singing in the streets or in special shows too.
